"Raindrops Go on Fallin' on My Head" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the 1969 picture Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.[3] The uplifting lyrics draw somebody who overcomes his troubles and worries by realizing that "it won't be long 'till happiness steps up to greet me."[iv] [5]

The single by B. J. Thomas reached No. one on charts in the United States, Canada and Norway, and reached No. 38 in the UK Singles Chart.[three] It topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in Jan 1970 and was also the first American No. i hit of the 1970s. The vocal too spent 7 weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart.[six] Billboard ranked it as the No. four song of 1970. According to Billboard magazine, Thomas' unmarried had sold over 2 million copies by March fourteen, 1970, with eight-rail and cassette versions as well climbing the charts.[7] It won an Oscar for Best Original Song.[3] Bacharach also won Best Original Score.

History [edit]

Composition and recording [edit]

The vocal was recorded past B. J. Thomas in 7 takes, afterwards Bacharach expressed dissatisfaction with the start six. In the film version of the song, Thomas had been recovering from laryngitis, which fabricated his voice audio huskier than in the vii-inch release. The motion picture version featured a split vaudeville-style instrumental break in double fourth dimension while Paul Newman performed bicycle stunts.[ commendation needed ]

Ray Stevens was first offered the opportunity to record it for the pic, but turned it down. He chose instead to tape the song "Dominicus Morning Coming Down", written by Kris Kristofferson. Bob Dylan is supposed to accept been approached for the vocal, but he reportedly declined too.[8] The trumpet solos in the song are performed by Chuck Findley.[9]

Legacy [edit]

Golden record presented to backup singer Linda November for her work on "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"

The song was featured during the 2004 superhero motion-picture show Spider-Man 2 over a montage sequence when Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) initially renounces his identity as Spider-Homo.[10] The same yr, it finished at number 23 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. In 2008, the single was ranked 85th on Billboard's Hot 100 All-Time Peak Songs[11] and placed 95th in the 55th Anniversary edition of the All-Time Hot 100 list in 2013.[12] Billboard Magazine also ranked the song 15th on its Top 50 Movie Songs of All Fourth dimension listing in 2014.[13]

The song, initially when information technology came out, I believe information technology was October of 69, the movie didn't come up out until December, it did get some bad reviews. It was a very unique and different sounding song, Bacharach and David never had any qualms most trying to do annihilation different, or push the envelope and then to speak. So nowadays, information technology sounds pretty tame, merely back and so, radio resisted it to some caste. But, when the picture came out it hitting hugely and sold nearly 200,000 to 300,000 records a day [and continued selling] for nearly 3 years.
